Complete Moving Checklist: Everything You Need Before Moving Day

April 2, 2026 · Move That Stuff

Moving is one of life's most stressful events, but a solid plan makes all the difference. Use this checklist to stay organized from start to finish.

4 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Book your moving company (that's us!)
  • Start decluttering — donate, sell, or toss items you don't need
  • Create a moving binder or folder for important documents
  • Notify your landlord if you're renting
  • Start collecting packing supplies (boxes, tape, bubble wrap)
  • Research schools, doctors, and services in your new area if applicable

2-3 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Begin packing non-essential items (seasonal decor, books, rarely used kitchen items)
  • Change your address with USPS, banks, subscriptions, and insurance
  • Transfer or set up utilities at your new home (electric, gas, water, internet)
  • Arrange care for kids and pets on moving day
  • Take photos of electronics setups before disconnecting
  • Use up perishable food — plan meals around what's in the fridge

1 Week Before Your Move

  • Finish packing all rooms except daily essentials
  • Label every box with the room it belongs in and a brief description
  • Confirm your moving date and time with your movers
  • Pack a "first night" box with essentials: toiletries, medications, phone chargers, snacks, paper towels, basic tools, bed sheets
  • Disassemble furniture that you can handle (bed frames, shelves)
  • Clean out the fridge and defrost the freezer

Moving Day

  • Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, and cabinet
  • Keep your essentials box, valuables, and important documents with you
  • Be available to direct the movers — point out fragile items and priorities
  • Check all utilities are turned off at the old place
  • Lock up and hand over keys
  • At the new place: check that everything arrived and inspect for damage

After the Move

  • Unpack the essentials box first
  • Set up beds so everyone can sleep comfortably the first night
  • Unpack room by room — kitchen and bathrooms first
  • Update your driver's license and vehicle registration
  • Meet your neighbors
  • Leave us a review if we did a great job!
