Last Minute Moving Tips: How to Pull Off a Quick Move
April 3, 2026 · Move That Stuff
Sometimes life doesn't give you four weeks to plan a move. Whether it's a job transfer, a lease situation, or a family emergency, here's how to pull off a last-minute move without losing your mind.
First: Call Movers Now
This is the most important step. Moving companies book up, especially on weekends and at the end of the month. Call today — not tomorrow. Be upfront about your timeline. Many companies (including us) offer same-day and next-day availability for last-minute moves, but slots fill fast.
If you can be flexible on the exact day and time, you'll have a much better chance of getting booked.
Don't Pack — Purge
You don't have time to carefully wrap every item you own. Start by getting rid of anything you don't need. Be ruthless. If you haven't used it in a year, it's not coming with you. Donate, trash, or leave it for a later trip. The less you move, the faster and cheaper the whole process is.
The Speed Packing Method
- Trash bags for soft items — Clothes, linens, towels, and stuffed animals go straight into garbage bags. They're faster than boxes and protect fine.
- Laundry baskets and bins — Use what you have. Laundry baskets, storage bins, suitcases, and dresser drawers can all carry items.
- Leave dresser drawers full — Your movers can carry the dresser with clothes still in the drawers. Just wrap it in stretch wrap.
- Towels and linens as packing material — Wrap fragile items in towels instead of buying bubble wrap.
- One room at a time — Don't bounce between rooms. Finish one, move to the next.
What to Pack First (and Last)
Pack first: Guest rooms, storage areas, seasonal items, books, decorations — anything you won't need before the move.
Pack last: Kitchen essentials (one pot, one pan, plates for today), bathroom basics, phone chargers, a change of clothes, and your "first night" box.
The First Night Box
This is the most important box you'll pack. It goes in your car (not the truck) and contains everything you need for the first night:
- Phone chargers
- Toiletries and medications
- Change of clothes and pajamas
- Bed sheets and pillows
- Snacks and water
- Paper towels and trash bags
- Basic tools (screwdriver, hammer)
- Important documents
Utilities and Address Changes
Even if you're moving fast, handle these immediately:
- Transfer or set up electric, gas, water, and internet at the new place
- Forward your mail through USPS (takes 5 minutes online)
- Update your address with your bank and insurance
