Summer Moving in Tulsa: Beat the Heat and the Rush

April 3, 2026 · Move That Stuff

Summer is the busiest moving season in Tulsa — and the hottest. Between May and September, temperatures regularly exceed 95°F, and movers are booked solid. Here's how to plan a summer move that doesn't break you (or your budget).

Why Summer Is Peak Moving Season

Families with school-age kids want to move between school years. College students are moving in and out. Leases often align with summer. This creates a surge in demand that drives up prices and limits availability. If you can move in April, May, or September (the edges of summer), you'll find better rates and more flexibility.

Beating the Tulsa Heat

Oklahoma heat is no joke. Here's how to stay safe:

  • Book an early start — Request a 7:00 or 8:00 AM start time. The coolest part of the day is early morning.
  • Hydrate aggressively — Keep a cooler of water and sports drinks accessible for you and the movers. Dehydration sneaks up fast.
  • Keep the AC running — At both locations, keep the air conditioning on during the move. Loading a truck is exhausting; coming inside to cool air makes a huge difference.
  • Protect heat-sensitive items — Candles, vinyl records, chocolate, medications, and electronics can be damaged by extreme heat. Pack these in your air-conditioned car, not the truck.
  • Watch for signs of heat exhaustion — Dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, or confusion. If anyone feels off, stop and cool down immediately.

How to Save Money on a Summer Move

  • Move mid-week — Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are significantly cheaper than weekend moves in summer
  • Move mid-month — The first and last days of the month are the busiest. Moving on the 10th or 15th can save you hundreds.
  • Book 3-4 weeks ahead — Last-minute summer moves are expensive because demand is high and slots are limited
  • Declutter before you move — Less stuff = fewer hours = lower cost. Summer is a great time for a garage sale.

Protecting Your Belongings in the Heat

A moving truck sitting in the Tulsa sun can reach 140°F+ inside. Minimize the time items spend in the truck by loading and unloading as quickly as possible. For items that can't handle heat (electronics, wine, plants, photos), transport them in your own vehicle with the AC running.
